NEW YORK: closed higher on Friday, extending their rally amid gains in the resources sector after data in China showed a pick-up in manufacturing activity.
Based on the latest available data, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 41.63 points, or 0.39 percent, to end unofficiallly at 10,829.68. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index gained 5.04 points, or 0.44 percent, to finish unofficially at 1,146.24. The Composite Index advanced 2.13 points, or 0.09 percent, to close unofficially at 2,370.75.
For the week, the Dow ended down 0.3 percent, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.2 percent and the Nasdaq declined 0.4 percent.
